The long awaited WordPress 2.8 is to be released on 10th June 2009 according to announcements made by wordpress.org. The new version come with a few enhancements as well as suggestions on upgrades of MySQL and PHP.
The current version (2.7.1) of WordPress operates under the PHP4 and MySQL 4.0. and 2.8 should be ok with this. But the talk is for future releases of wordpress i.e 2.9 which will require PHP5 and MySQL 4.1.2.
The guys at wordpress.org have gone a step further to include notification via the upgrader where a user will will be advised to request their host to upgrade MySQL to the latest version and instruction on how to change your PHP will be made available via the Codex page.
