WordPress 2.8 Beta Preliminary Test Findings.
Welcome to WordPress 2.8 Beta Test.
As always before any major version release the guys at wordpress.org have decided once again to let the end user test the next release. Since these test are done in real live environment the results returned are of the highest quality and any bugs found are ironed out ASAP.
I have put WP 2.8 Beta to the test and as far as I can see there are no major issues. The problems usually arise from plug-in compatibility and thus far I have found All-In-One-SEO to have a slight issue which in turn kinda disappeared by itself. None-the-less I’ll keep an eye on it to see what ensues and report back to the author(s) should there be any more compatibility issues.
Back to WP 2.8 there is one new cool future added which I personally was thinking why it wasn’t available with WP 2.7.1 and that is the ability to add a theme directly within the admin panel. Just like you would with the plug-ins, all you have to do is access the admin dashboard>>appearance and you will see the option to add new theme.
You can search or upload a zipped theme file and WP 2.8 will unzip it and install it for you. Gone will be the days of find the theme, download it, unzip it, ftp it to your server, access admin dashboard>>appearance and activate it shenanigans 
*Thumbs up* to the guys at wordpress.org for this cool feature. The widget screen has an improved visual layout making it more appealing to the eye, functionality remain the same as 2.7.1.
There are no other major changes as far as the dashboard and visual features are concerned from what I could decipher. But I am sure behind the scene under the dashboard hood there are few additions added, we shall just have to wait for the major announcement after the beta test and before the main go live event.

I’ve yet to set up my blog and I am in two mind if I should wait for 2.8 or go with 2.7.1. I am not a techy and I won’t have the first clue on upgrading, any suggestions?

Na man don’t wait for 2.8 just go ahead and start with 2.7.1 and don’t worry about the upgrade, thats what am here for

I took a look behind the scenes too, I like the fact that they added number lines in the theme editor. That will save the time on finding those errors @ line # so and so.
