WordPress 2.8.2 Is Out – Upgrade Now The Right Way!
Today saw the release of the next installment of wordpress version 2.8 (WP 2.8.2) and already there are problems being reported. These problems are not necessarily an issue with the new version of wp or bugs, but more so a problem with some webmaster not following the simple upgrade guidelines.
- Back up your core files and database.
- Deactivate all plugins.
- Upgrade your installation.
- Make sure all is working fine before reactivating the plugins.
- Plugins should be reactivated one by one all the while checking that everything is still working fine.
- If after reactivating a plugin things go wrong – deactivate and search for an updated version for the current wp installation.
Blank Page After Upgrading:
Doing my rounds around the forums one of the major issue being reported is having a blank blog page after upgrade. This is not a new problem as it has been know to happen with previous versions as well as when upgrading certain plugins or changing a theme.
This problem can be caused by a number of things. wp-cache has been known to be a problem so trying deactivating it if you have it installed.
Another problem maybe your php version needs updating, if you are on php 4 trying updating to php 5. Reverse this if you are on php 5. You can do so in your cp panel or by appending this code
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php
in to your .htaccess file.
If there is a plugin that is known to be the root of the problem, sometimes just deactivating may not resolve the issue. In this case you will need to access your phpmyadmin and drop any empty databases that were used by now-disabled Plugins.
Another option is to rename the plugin folder and then make a new blank folder named plugin, then rename all the installed themes but for the default one and test your blog. This assumes you have no access to your admin section and all work is undertaken via your ftp.
Once you have gained access to your blog and most importantly the admin dashboard, you can begin the elimination process starting with the original theme and then followed by the plugins one by one.

I have this blank admin page problem after attempting to upgrade from 2.7 to 2.8.2
You suggested that users were not following instructions. Well, here is the problem: there is no mention of instructions! The prompt to upgrade appears at the top of the page, the user clicks on it. I think at this point it would be ideal if WordPress directed you to the instructions, or even a simple “Have you deactivated your plugins?” message. There is no such message or advice. Is the user just suposed to magically know this? Or should the user inherantly be weary of following the prompts that WordPress are giving them without researching the process first?
Otherwise, the users just follow the prompts and end up with the blank admin page problem.
This is exactly what happened to me and many other users.
I have spent several hours troubleshooting this problem and have tried every suggestion but none have yet worked. I have not yet tried the change to php5 yet though and this will be my next move.
The lack of any warning or instructions to deactivate plugins before upgrading is a huge flaw in the upgrade process that could very easily be fixed with the addition of a simple one sentence warning message as mentioned above.

I totaly agree with you on some of the points raised and a lot more can be done with the upgrade process to make it safe and flawless.
I personally would like to see the upgrade process redifned to take into account of core file and dbase backup process. So when you click on the update the process will automaticaly deactivate the plugins, proceed to backup or atleast prompt you to backup. And after these process have been fulfilled should it proceed to the next step of upgrading the installation.
Once the upgrade is completed the system prompts you to upgrade the database in some cases, at this point it can promt you reactivate the plugins after having made sure the upgrade was a success and all is working fine.
Perhaps some suggestions to be made to the guys at wordpress.org to see what can be done on this issue as it seems to cause a lot of issues and heartaches to a process that is supposed to be simple and trouble free.
What are the benefits of upgrading to the new WP? I don’t much has been changed.
WordPress 2.8.1 has an XSS vulnerability where comment URLs are not fully sanitized when displayed in the admin. This can be exploited to direct you from admin to another site. WP 2.8.2 is a fix for this vulnerability, more of a security release than anything else.
I had the exact same problem when upgrading to 2.8.1, and then manually upgraded to 2.8.2, to see if it would fix the problem, but it didn’t, tried all of the above and nothing worked.
I then had to manually downgrade to 2.7, which fixed the problem, and then automatically upgraded to 2.8.2, no problems

I upgraded to 2.8.2 and now none of the links from the homepage work. Clicking on any menu item in the navbar gives a 404 error and so does clicking on any READ MORE links in the posts on the homepage. This is not the same as getting a blank page in the admin pane. Any ideas?

The vast majority of the current issues seem to center around a php problem. For some reason when upgrading, especially if all plugins are not deactivated, the core files do not seem to be written in fully or correctly.
Have you tried switching to the default theme to see if the links work? The other issue is themes not being compatible with WP2.8.2 – again this is a php issue as some calls made are not recognised by current versions of php and themes need to be updated to take this into account.
If you did a backup then you may need to revert back to 2.8.1 and then upgrade by following the 3 simple steps. Be sure to switch to the default theme before upgrading though – if you continue to have problems then please drop me an email and will take a look for you.
P.S: Tryin resetting your permalinks, clear the cache and cookies of your browser and access your site again. This has been know to work for some.
