10 Ways To Increase Your BlogÂ’s Pageviews

Posted by Zulfikar under Blogging Etiquettes, Blogging tips, Contest, Traffic Generation

With Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher, having people click onto more pages helps your revenue immensely, but how do you get them to read more than one page when they visit your website? Here are a few tips.

1. Create pages within the blog that contain reference material you refer to often in your posts. These static pages will also get crawled and indexed by the search engines and as you write posts about your topics you can refer people to these static pages as references to what you are posting about.

2. Use articles as static pages. You can reprint articles on any topic for free by visiting one of the many article directories like http://www.articlecontentprovider.com/articlesubmit/ Then refer people to read the articles that relate to the post you are making. You could even add one article as a new page every time you make a post.

3. Refer to other posts you have made on your blog or on another one of your blogs while posting. This gets the reader to click over to previous posts. You can even decide your posts by browsing previous posts and deciding which one to follow up on. Those archives are not to be lost and forgotten. Its great material, (you wrote it right?), so use it.

4. Create a page that links to your favorite posts that are timeless. You browse your old posts, find posts that you want readers to find easily, then build a links page with those posts directly linked. Then add a link to that page from your front page. Call it favorite posts or whatever and you will benefit by those that click through and follow those links.

5. Use the “more” tag as often as you can (If your theme does not support excerpts). You write your post as normal, then decide where you want to break the post up onto a new page. You put the more tag in and readers have to click to a new page to read the rest of the story.

6. Write once per week special projects. These are a series of articles on a particular topic. You will be offering it once per week giving readers a week to comment on it, then have them hanging on for next weeks special post in the series. Each time add links to previous posts in that series.

7. Using your content from your other websites or blogs is also a great way to get more pageviews for all of them. Use the target new tag and refer to material on your other blogs and websites. It will open a new window leaving the current blog open while they visit your other website or blog. You can quickly double up your pageviews while also introducing your readers to your other websites and blogs.

8. Make a list of 10 previous posts and the links to those posts. Make a post in your blog about 10 things you want your readers to know and read in case they have not done so before. At your suggestion they will at least go see if they have read those posts before, increasing your pageviews once again plus bringing old material to new readers. That also lets them know they should browse the archives for things they have missed.

9. Using that same list of 10 posts or a new one, visit other blogs on your topic. Find posts that talk about something similar to one of those 10 posts, then instead of adding a link in your signature to the home page, make a comment there and refer to the post that is similar and that contains helpful information to that blogger and their readers. You will also be increasing your link popularity while doing this. Do not spam the link. Make sure it actually contains useful information. DonÂ’t be trolls or spammers and you will end up with new readers and more page views for your blog.

10. Do not stop being creative. Use the tips in this article, plus invent some of your own ways to interlink your blog posts together. Create pages. Don’t just post and forget. That content is valuable, use it. Do not make people search your blog. They are lazy and busy. Bring it to them. That is just good customer service.

I hope this article helps you learn there is more to blogging than just writing a post once in awhile or even daily. If you employ the tips I just gave you into your blog I guarantee you will increase your pageviews which in turn will increase your revenue if using an ad program in your blog.

    Hi Zulfikar,

Do you “save” material to post later on, i.e. if you write 3 articles in a day, would you only post one article and save the others for a rainy day?

I’m toying with the idea of trying to produce a bunch of articles before actually adding a blog to my site that I can post on days where I don’t have a chance to talk about “today’s news”.

Curious to see what your thoughts are…

  7. Zulfikar
    Twitter: zulfnore

@laskavy – You are welcome. It’s all about consistency, am guilty as charged on that part too :P

  8. Zulfikar

    |

@Paul@Computer Repair and Upgrade – Hey Paul, now that’s a very good question. Not for this particular site but I do quiet a lot for my other less popular blogs where I get a bunch of articles ready and either schedule them or just save as a draft for later.

On a couple of them I use the Auto Post plugin, you just write and upload them and the plugin takes care of scheduling acording to you selected settings options.

For this blog only one article which was too long for one sitting I have it split into 3 parts – 2 of which I’ve already posted, Understanding Web Statistics Part I & Part II with Part III coming this weekend.

The idea of creating a number of articles before adding a blog to your site is actully great. A well thought out process and stratergy of how and what type of post you are going to make now and later on as the blog grows is an important part of research. To see a blog in a blueprint format before building it will give you a good sense of direction, so I would say you on the right track there :)

@Zulfikar – All I do is putting a recent post widget, a popular post widget, a related post widget, and engage readers to visit my old post in a related new posts. Also, I engage readers to spend time to leave a comment on my blog. Commenting is increasing pageviews, isn’t it?

  12. Zulfikar
    Twitter: zulfnore
    |

@Reza Winandar@Blogging Guide – Thanks for sharing Reza, those are great tips and yes, comments do increase pageviews.

The combination of a Great title, a good post teaser and a display of the number of comment go to entice the reader to want to read more. Not only what the post is about, but to see what others are saying about it.

So it is a great idea and an incentive for the blogger to encourage commenting as much as posible – but not so much in “your face” kinda encouragement. readers should be left in control to decide on commenting or not and have the freedom to express themeselves the way they want.

all in all, yes encouragement is good for the blog, the blogger and the commenter – as it promotes reader retention, blog popularity, involvement and above all, that all so important “Community communication” feeling and atmosphere :)

Another thing you can do to get more page views is add related posts at the bottom of your blog. I did this and it raised my average page views from 1.28-2.9. It also increased my average time on site from 28 seconds- 1:09.

@Susi – no problem. I think its not that because they are not interested but the main reason is that a lot of us are too busy, doing to many things at once and tend to bypass many usefull info-articles (with good intentions of coming back but never get the chance) – It helps a lot if a blogger makes it easy to find and quickly digest the information and also make it easy to either bookmark it or subscribe to feeds. At the same time it is important to take a little time out as a reader and gather as much info as possible.

Finding a common ground to impart and digest information is an evolution at the moment and blogs are going a little way to improve this situation – so keep on blogging with positive outlook :)

Its really true that if one got enough traffic then he should start using the adsense, by doing so at least; one can pay for his hosting fees.

Also you have included enough tips for a newbie to start with his own adsense site.

I don’t get the bit about adddin the “more” tags. Is that going to make people read more? sureely thay are already reading it if they have gotten that far? wouldn’t they actually be more likely to stop, rather than click?

@hussy@Brighton – The more tag is specific for themes that do not support excerpts. By adding it, the front end will display part of the post (say the first paragraph) and the rest would be hiden thus forcing the reader to click on the read more tag to see the rest of the post.

The way wordpress works is use the index.php to display all of the posts (excerpts or full) and a visit to this page counts as one page view. Clicking on more takes the reader to read the full post which is displayed using the single.php effectively adding yet another pageview to your stats.

I hope that makes sense and clarifies the use of read more tags.
